In our age of spoiler-obsessed TV (and the added scrutiny it places on Manhunters Porn (2006)our favorite shows), red carpets and other interview opportunities have become tightrope acts for actors, who are expected to offer previews of their new projects without risking the wrath of their bosses (or weary publicists) who weren’t ready for certain tidbits to be made public.
Some actors have gotten creative in honing their improvisational skills – and not always in ways that ingratiate them to journalists. Mad Men’s Vincent Kartheiser once flung paper footballs at a Vulture reporter’s head instead of answering her questions about that, admittedly, highly secretive AMC drama. But, if ever there was an award for charismatic question dodging, it would go to Mandy Patinkin.
SEE ALSO: Quinn faces his demons in 'Homeland,' and destroys us in the processI interviewed the Homelandactor a few years ago at an Emmy party just before the premiere of his Showtime drama’s third season. He didn’t give me any dirt, but he did give me a recipe for a tuna burger. (The Patinkin family has a history of feeding you the goods; the actor’s mother authored Grandma Doralee Patinkin's Jewish Family Cookbook).
In honor of Homeland's sixth season (which is as secretive as ever), Mashablethought it only fitting to make Patinkin’s snack. Pair it with white wine and your favorite jazz to impress your guests at your next Homelandviewing party.
You'll need: English muffins; canned tuna; white wine; parmesan cheese; cheddar or American cheese; one onion; one tomato; mayonnaise; salt and pepper to taste.
Here are Patinkin's instructions, as relayed to him by the mother of a school friend in the second grade -- and much like the jazz stylings that Saul and Carrie appreciate, there's a certain amount of improvisation required.
"You toast an english muffin, then you take tuna, white wine, parmesan cheese, mix it all up; and an onion chopped up like it’s water. You mix it up with mayonnaise -- not too much -- you can use miracle whip, but that’s an issue for some. Then salt and pepper. You spread it on, then you can put grated cheese on it. When we were young, it was grated American cheese, now it’s fancy cheddar with some tomato. And then you broil it. There you have it, Mandy’s Tuna Burger."
This season of Homelandis set in New York and takes place in the interim period after the election of the first female U.S. president (played by Fargo’s Elizabeth Marvel) before she takes office.
Patinkin’s Saul Berenson is still with the CIA and he and colleague Dar Adal, a CIA Black Ops director played by F. Murray Abraham, may not see eye-to-eye on their incoming Commander in Chief. We're guessing that Saul might need to finish all the wine not used in this tuna mixture by the end of the season.
Patinkin instructed me to combine the canned tuna with some mayonnaise – or Miracle Whip, if you’re one of thosepeople.
Tuna and mayo may take a while to blend together. You know what else took awhile to blend together? Claire Danes’ Carrie Mathison and her former colleague/still-unconsummated love interest Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend).
They were finally starting to get somewhere with that second part last season when Quinn saved Carrie from an assassination attempt, but things went downhill for him fast after that -- he ended up in a coma after a chemical weapon attack.
In Season 6, Quinn is decidedly the worse for wear -- drug addicted and suffering from PTSD, he's struggling with his rehab and even got his ass kicked by a thief in the season premiere.
However, after seeing how wrecked he was after being locked up in the VA, Carrie finally took pity on him and brought him back to her apartment to stay downstairs. Quinn's in no condition to "blend" right now, but maybe there's some hope on the horizon.
Guess you'd better add some salt and pepper to that tuna mix, to complement Quinn's sharper edge.
If this season’s inauguration-themed topic makes you cry like you just grated a raw onion to mix with Parmesan cheese and tuna, you should know that the story was plotted out months before the events of our actual U.S. election.
Series executive producer and showrunner Alex Gansa told entertainment journalists last summer at the show’s Television Critics Association press day that “Although [this president] is a woman, she’s a little bit Hillary, a little bit Donald Trump, and a little bit Bernie Sanders. Anything could happen.”
Similar to one’s personal preference when it comes to deciding whether to dress a sandwich with either the classic styling of sliced American cheese or the more modern choice of cheddar, this season of Homelandwill also delve deeper into the diverse beliefs and demographics that make up the population of the U.S.
Carrie is now working for a New York-based human rights group that is concerned with the welfare of Muslim Americans. Regardless of political beliefs, she respects everyone's right to free speech (and presumably the right to choose their preferred sandwich toppings).
Turn up the heat (like every season of Homeland) until the cheese melts, and there you have it -- Mandy's Tuna Burger.
We’re certain that all of these stories will get pressed together soon, but right now we can only speculate on how Carrie and Saul will get out of these pickles.
Homelandairs at 9 p.m. Sundays on Showtime.
