LOS ANGELES -- Quinta Brunson came to Los Angeles with two friends in tow and the dream of making it big in Hollywood.
Now -- a couple of years and a handful of odd jobs later -- Brunson's face is plastered across billboards in Hollywood as part of promotion for Broke, the new YouTube Red show she created, wrote and stars in.
The story mirrors Brunson's own tale. She stars alongside Maurice Williams and Paul Dupree. The trio play post-grads who are trying to making ends meet after switching cites and "foolishly deciding to pursue their dreams," as the description reads.
"Everything that happens to my character Miloh almost happened to me basically," Brunson told Mashable."All things I’ve experienced, like, of course, being broke in LA and working a job you don’t like because you are trying to work toward something else."

Two years ago, she created a character for a comedy sketch called "The Girl Who's Never Been on a Nice Date." A friend suggested she turn into a video. She did it and uploaded the video to Instagram.
It went viral, and Bruson was even able to make a ton of money from selling T-shirts based on the character itself.
Not long after, she landed a freelance gig at BuzzFeed, appearing in everything from taste-test videos to comedy clips. Eventually, she was hired full time -- a smart move on BuzzFeed's part. Her videos -- such as "Real Things All Couples Do" and "Drinking: 20 vs. 25" -- garnered millions of views for the platform, which around the same time began bolstering its video division, BuzzFeed Motion Pictures.
The idea for Broke came last summer. But before it could become a series, Brunson and BuzzFeed had to test it out with viewers.
"The first step was making a video, to see how it would do," Brunson said. "And it did really well ... So we did a few more just to see if we could get people to follow the storyline. People really did."

They shot an entire season, and YouTube picked up the rights for the show, marking the first collaboration between BuzzFeed and the Google-owned video platform.
The series, which debuted Friday, comes just a month after BuzzFeed split its news and entertainment divisions, with the latter being led by BuzzFeed Motion Pictures President Ze Frank. BuzzFeed Motion Pictures has amassed over 5 billion video views across more than 30 platforms.
"I love new media, and watching digital media turn into whatever the hell it’s going to turn into," Brunson said. "Who would have thought three years ago that YouTube would release originals? They keep blowing minds and growing with the times."
BuzzFeed, which has had a few recent shake-ups (including one on Monday), has also been a solid partner for Brunson. She hopes the show will gain a new audience on YouTube Red.

YouTube Red has also picked up another BuzzFeed show from the The Try Guys called Squad Wars, which will feature the boys challenging "other famous squads to test the limits of their respective loyalties and friendship." Production will begin this fall and it's set for a 2017 release.
New episodes of Broke-- there are 11 total -- will debut on YouTube Red every Wednesday. The platform costs $10 a month.
