Warner Bros. announced Wednesday that Jude Law will play Albus Dumbledore,Watch Midhunter the young Hogwarts professor who fell in love with and eventually defeated Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp.
SEE ALSO: 'Fantastic Beasts' casts Young DumbledoreBack when I was a wee Potter fan, Johnny Depp and Jude Law were two of the hottest actors of the early-mid-aughts and many fans' dream actors to play Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. Depp was fresh off the first (and best) Pirates of the Caribbeanmovie in 2003 and Law was everywhere with I Heart Huckabees, Alfie, and Closer.
Many of these discussions pre-date Twitter and Tumblr, so they exist on janky forums that Warner Bros. appears to be studying in a delayed attempt at fan service.
(that one is from 2012!)
Alas, the times have changed. After Amber Heard's abuse allegations against Depp, Potter fandom fans were vocal about their displeasure, but Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling stuck by their casting.

Law, at least, remains unproblematic, so fan response seems tips toward cautious optimism or full-on support. We won't get any creepy romance involving Depp because Dumbledore and Grindelwald were only close for several months as teenagers, and didn't cross paths again until their final duel in 1945 (the first Fantastic Beastsfilm took place in the 1920s).

Also, now we get to make Young Dumbledore/Young Pope (Youngledore? Dumblepope?) jokes for the next decade while they make these movies!
