Tom Cruise confirmed he's filming Top Gun 2within the "next year". He made the announcement on the Australian TV show Sunrise -- a rather unexpected place to calmly reveal such news.

"I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know. It's happening. It is definitely happening," Cruise told the program. "You're the first people that I've said this to."

While there have been murmurs of a sequel to the 1986 film for 30 years, the death of Top Gun's director Tony Scott stalled those plans.

With scant detail on the film, aside from the fact that "it's happening," it was left to the internet to figure out the plot. Will Val Kilmer somehow return as Iceman? Is Kenny Loggins going to collaborate with say, The Chainsmokers, for a rehash of the theme song?

Who knows, but everyone thinks there's going to be a helluva lot of drone action and modern, but ultimately unreliable fighter jets. And hopefully a revisit of thatvolleyball scene.
