It's official: Apple's AirPower wireless charging mat is Sex Trek The Man Eater (1999) porn parodydead.
The company confirmed to Mashable it has canceled its high-anticipated AirPower charging mat announced in 2017.
"After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project," Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio said. "We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch."

AirPower was announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone X and was touted as the one wireless charger to rule them all. With AirPower, users would be able to wirelessly charge an iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.
But after missing its 2018 launch and failing to show up during the iPhone XS and XR's announcement event, it was clear something was wrong.
A report from phone leaker Sonny Dickson cited issues with getting the multiple wireless charging coils inside of the mat to work properly. Dickson's report also noted difficulties overcoming overheating.
"Currently the device produces far too much heat, which causes performance setbacks, and can affect the ability of the devices to charge if they become too warm in the process," the report said. "It also affects the ability of Apple’s custom charging chip, which runs a stripped down version of iOS, to function as intended."
Despite the engineering challenges, there was still hope Apple might eventually solve them and release AirPower.
In fact, reports from earlier in the month even suggested Apple had green-lit AirPower for production for launch by the end of this month. There's even leftover code inside of the latest iOS 12.2 software release. The new AirPods packaging also includes references to AirPower.
But alas, AirPower was not meant to be and instead of stringing users along, Apple made the right call announcing its cancelation. Better to admit AirPower is dead than to keep giving false hope that they're still trying to iron out the issues.
